Sword Workshop 2014

On February 22, 2014, ARMA Houston was invited back for the 9th time to do a beginning sword workshop for future fight choreographers. ARMA was represented by Kyle Cook, Stacy Clifford, Jonathan Davis, Brian Kirk, Adam Lambert, Josh Brown, Anthony Mann, Brian Su, Magi Hernandez, and Stephen Hernandez.

We started immediately with training, dividing the students into three groups learning longsword, rapier, and dagger. The longsword group worked on Basic Foot Work, Primary Guards, and Basic Cuts for longsword, and were also shown some cut/counter cut drills. The rapier group worked on footwork, basic parries and counterthrusting, and how to pull off the rapier switch in the final scene of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Students in the dagger group learned unarmed defenses against the dagger, along with a few techniques for dagger against dagger and dagger against longsword. The afternoon concluded with students demonstrating what they had learned. Splitting up into small groups, the students demonstrated choreographs of their own short fight scenes.
